CEP SUPPORTS SAME SEX MARRIAGE LEGISLATION
For immediate release: January 21, 2005
One of Canada's largest unions is undertaking a major effort in support of same sex marriage legislation in Parliament.
The National Executive Board of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, representing some 150,000 members, has unanimously adopted a resolution strongly endorsing the right for same sex couples to marry as "a fundamental issue of human rights."
The same resolution called on all Members of Parliament to support same sex marriage legislation and asked all CEP local unions and members to get behind the measure by contacting their individual MPs.
"We think that it is time for all Canadians to clearly send a message to Parliament that, as a nation, we support human rights around the globe and in our own back yards, including the right of same sex couples to marry," commented CEP National President Brian Payne.
"We hope that this resolution from our Board will serve as an example to others to take a similar stand."
The CEP resolution is being sent directly to each MP.
